This September my family was blessed with a new addition. A niece! She is too cute for words and already has quite an influence on the world around her. This family can be pretty tough to break into (I should know I have pretty-much gave up myself) but when she arrived she really pulled the fabric of the family together, reminding them of their bonds.
As for me when the daughter of my best friend turned sister-in-law is born apparently I go a little knit crazy :) When I heard she was on the way I was already spinning some soft white merino wool. I thought, so that is what this is for! And I spun enough to make 5 skeins of navaho plied yarn. It was bouncy and soft and just enough to make a baby blanket. But I did not really just want to make a baby blanket, I also wanted to make a shawl. Something that my little niece might actually use when all grown up as well. So after scouring Ravelry but not finding anything that I liked (everything was either too lacy or not lacy enough) I decided to design and knit a pi shawl.
The Pi shawl is a circular shawl that was designed by Elizabeth Zimmerman consisting of successive rounds of doubling the stitch count followed by plain rounds where the stitch count does not change, and it is a perfect template for designing a lace shawl since you can insert the lace pattern of your choosing in every round.
I love the way that the pattern worked out. I was able to include so much texture and design into the shawl and I really think that it can live up to my expectations.
But when the shawl was done being knitted I was reminded that I still had one skein of white 2 ply yarn, and the niece demanded to have that as well (in her adorable way). So I complied, and one adorable baby hat and a cardigan resulted.
Then I took a break, at least for a little while. One of my coworkers is expecting a baby in November!
