What babies do to me…

This September my family was blessed with a new addition. A niece! She is too cute for words and already has quite an influence on the world around her. This family can be pretty tough to break into (I should know I have pretty-much gave up myself) but when she arrived she really pulled the fabric of the family together, reminding them of their bonds.

As for me when the daughter of my best friend turned sister-in-law is born apparently I go a little knit crazy :) When I heard she was on the way I was already spinning some soft white merino wool. I thought, so that is what this is for! And I spun enough to make 5 skeins of navaho plied yarn. It was bouncy and soft and just enough to make a baby blanket. But I did not really just want to make a baby blanket, I also wanted to make a shawl. Something that my little niece might actually use when all grown up as well. So after scouring Ravelry but not finding anything that I liked (everything was either too lacy or not lacy enough) I decided to design and knit a pi shawl.

The Pi shawl is a circular shawl that was designed by Elizabeth Zimmerman consisting of successive rounds of doubling the stitch count followed by plain rounds where the stitch count does not change, and it is a perfect template for designing a lace shawl since you can insert the lace pattern of your choosing in every round.

I love the way that the pattern worked out. I was able to include so much texture and design into the shawl and I really think that it can live up to my expectations.

But when the shawl was done being knitted I was reminded that I still had one skein of white 2 ply yarn, and the niece demanded to have that as well (in her adorable way). So I complied, and one adorable baby hat and a cardigan resulted.

Then I took a break, at least for a little while. One of my coworkers is expecting a baby in November!

Why I could never be a Masseuse

During a conversation with my ever-brilliant sister she mentioned that she might like to get into body-work. Along the lines of chiropractic except without all the cracking (if that makes any sense). The problem with this is that many of the alternative chiropractic sorts of programs tend to be directed towards people who already have their bone-popping education , which she had no desire to obtain. It was then that I suggested a career path which a dear friend of mine has undertaken. I said that if I was in her position I would probably start out by going to massage school (to be followed up by other complimentary healing practices). However, I quickly had to counter this with. Except that I wouldn’t.

You see the problem with being a masseuse is that you spend all your time making people feel wonderful. Which is AMAZING, and I am so glad that people do this. However, I would have no desire to take on a job in which I would spend all day being ridiculously jealous of my clients!
The thing about massage is that I never get tired of it (receiving that is). My friend (the masseuse) once made the mistake of offering a 15 hour massage rather than a 1.5 hour massage (it was a typo), and all I could think was. Wouldn’t that be AMAZING?!?!? I would volunteer for that any given day of the week.
So I guess that the bottom line of this post is. I would LOVE for my sister to go to massage school. She can practice on my any time, I wouldn’t complain :).

The Circle of Hooping

I started Hooping about 3 years ago. I really enjoy dancing with my hoop and learning new tricks. I also really enjoy teaching hooping to  others. Today was a pretty cool hooping experience. I met a friend of mine at the park because she wanted to learn to hoop. I think I managed to teach her the weave, and maybe a few other tricks (but tricks take time so I am not worried about how fast they are picked up). It was a gorgeous day for hooping and I got to practice some tricks that I am working on for the class I mentioned in an earlier post.
So as we were hooping my husband (who was taking pictures) noticed a girl sitting not very far away whom he recognized. It just so happens that she is the person who first introduced me to hooping 3 years ago ^_^ How is that for coincidence?

Space? What space do you speak of?

What I think of this photo:
This photo goes against the very concept of space travel (as does all of our current methods of space travel). You see, the problem that I have is that this picture is the very opposite of what I envision when I think about space travel.
And the problem is “space”. What space? Those people are crammed in there so tight they look like they can hardly move! Just think about it, they are out there in the vast expance of space with only two other people for light years. And it would just happen that those two people are right on top of them! Gosh they cannot do anything without those people right there, not to mention they have to dodge each others bodily fliuds because if they escape they can float anywhere! Yuck! No wonder they look so happy to be coming home!

Welcome!

I am a spinner of all things and happiest when I am creating something new whether that something is to be eaten, worn on your back, or simply observed. I have given myself the goal of blogging here at least once a week (hopefully twice) about the fun spiral y stuff in my life.

Currently I am part of a team that will be participating in the sheep to shawl contest at the Black Sheep Gathering, or BSG so you are sure to hear more about that in the future ^_^

I am also going to be taking a hooping (hula hooping) class from a friend of mine over at HoopRoots  http://www.hooproots.com/      I am super excited about the class because taking hooping classes is so fun and motivating which means that I hoop more! Which means that I learn more tricks and have more fun.

Anyway I hope you all want to join me in my adventures and I will try to post more soon ^_^
